How to Buy Dab Pens
Are you new to wax vaping? If so, you’ll find it helpful to have a primer on how to buy dab pens before you get started. Here are the three most important things to consider before you buy.
Temperature and Voltage Control
Different types of concentrates vaporize best in different temperature ranges. You don’t want to burn the terpenes and create harsh flavors, but you also don’t want to sit around waiting for the wax to melt before you can take your first hit. Determining the ideal temperature range for your material will require a bit of trial and error, so you need to buy a dab pen that offers voltage control.
Coil Type and Material Compatibility
Dab pens have different types of coils. A traditional dab pen with an upward-facing coil is typically smaller and more portable, but it’s designed to work only with waxy concentrates that are solid at room temperature. A dab straw like the Rokin Stinger, on the other hand, is less portable but can work with both solid and liquid concentrates.
Extra Features
Dab pens are designed to please expert vapers, and they’re often loaded with extra features that’ll delight you if you’re picky about flavor or performance. For example, the Rokin Stinger has a built-in bubbler that provides water filtration without the need to connect your device to an external water pipe.

Benefits of Dab Pens
Why might a dab pen or wax pen be the best type of vape for you to buy? These are the main benefits.
Best for Potency
Dab pens typically aren’t as portable as 510-thread batteries, but they can be markedly more potent. That’s because they’re designed to work with waxy concentrates – which are often stronger than oily concentrates – and because they usually have large airflow openings that make it easy for you to inhale deeply.
Easy Cleaning
Dab pens are easier to clean compared to vape pens with 510 cartridges. A vape cartridge can’t be cleaned effectively because of its small top opening, and its flavor quality will eventually degrade. The heating coil or element for a dab pen can be removed and soaked in alcohol to restore its original flavor and performance.
Lower Long-Term Costs
Dab pens have lower long-term costs than other types of vapes because their heating elements are cleanable. You can continue cleaning your dab pen’s coil or element until it eventually fails from heat stress, which might not happen for several months. Vape cartridges, on the other hand, require frequent replacement.
Best for At-Home Vaping
Many people find that dab pens are the best vapes for at-home enjoyment. The ritual of dabbing lends itself well to leisurely sessions, whereas vape pens are best for on-demand use when you’re out and about.
Dab Pen and Wax Pen FAQ
How much do dab pens cost?
The Rokin Stinger costs $79.95, and the Bar 510-thread battery – which can work with wax coils – starts at $16.95. (Learn more: How Much Are Dab Pens?)
Can dab pens work with oil-based concentrates?
Most coils for dab pens have large airflow openings. They’re not designed to work with concentrates that are liquid at room temperature because they can potentially leak. The Rokin Stinger is different because it’s a dab straw, which means that you touch the heating element directly to the material you want to vape. The Stinger works with both wax- and oil-based concentrates.
What’s the difference between a dab pen and a vape pen?
A dab pen is typically designed primarily for wax vaping and will usually include at least one coil or heating element. Vape pens are designed to work with 510-thread cartridges, which are generally compatible with oil-based concentrates only. A vape pen generally doesn’t include a cartridge, so you’ll need to purchase an empty cartridge or pre-filled weed cart separately.
How do you hit a dab pen?
To hit a traditional dab pen:
- Remove the mouthpiece to expose the coil’s heating element.
- Use a dab tool to put a rice-sized piece of wax on the element.
- Replace the mouthpiece.
- Click the button five times to turn the dab pen on.
- Press the button a few times briefly to melt the wax. You can remove the dab pen’s mouthpiece to ensure that the coil is fully coated.
- Hold the button while inhaling through the mouthpiece.
To hit the Rokin Stinger:
- Remove the water filter and add water to the maximum fill line. Replace the filter.
- Click the button five times to turn the Stinger on.
- Click and hold the button to activate the heating element.
- Touch the element to your wax or oil while inhaling gently through the mouthpiece.
- Release the button to turn the element off.

How do you clean a dab pen?
To clean a dab pen:
- Remove the coil or heating element and soak it in isopropyl alcohol for about an hour. Rinse it to remove any remaining residue.
- Moisten a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol and use it to remove residue from the dab pen’s threading.
Make sure that all components are completely dry before using the dab pen again.
