This thing is beefy! Which is a good thing takes a little while to get used to the digital display but then again I’m pretty much computer illiterate. Does what it should. It’s a little heavier and I like it a lot thanks.

This pen is really amazing. Dialing in the exact temperature I want makes all my cards very smooth. Have to get another one.

Very well made. Nice colored led display that shows everything. I bought this to replace another pen I lost. This (Thunder stick) is much better than the one I lost.

If you’ve ever taken a long drag and gotten a burnt, harsh hit at the end, you already know what the wrong battery feels like. Most stick batteries give you three voltage settings and call it precision. The Thunder XL was built to fix both of those problems.

At $19.95, it’s less than most quality cartridges. The question is whether your battery is doing justice to what you paid for the oil inside it.

What Is the Thunder XL?

The Thunder XL is Rokin’s flagship digital stick battery. It’s an upgraded version of the original Thunder model, made wider at 14mm to fit fatter cartridges, with a digital display added so you always know exactly what setting you’re on.

It uses a 650 mAh lithium ion battery, charges via USB-C, and works with any standard 510 thread cartridge. It also includes both auto-draw and push-button activation, so you’re not locked into one style.

The digital display shows:

  • Your current voltage setting
  • Battery life remaining
  • A draw counter

That last one is more useful than it sounds. Most people have no idea how many pulls they’re getting per charge or per cart. The draw counter removes the guesswork.

Why Voltage Control Matters More Than You Think

Most vape batteries give you three or four preset voltage options and let you pick. That works fine if every cartridge you use behaves the same way. They don’t.

Rosin and live resin carts are fundamentally different from distillate. Within each category, one brand’s oil can be thicker or thinner, heavier or lighter on terpenes, cleaner or not as clean. Each of those variables changes how the oil vaporizes and at what temperature it starts to taste burnt.

The Thunder XL runs from 2.0V to 4.0V in 0.1V increments. That’s not just a wider range. It means you can split the difference between settings rather than jumping from 2.4V to 3.0V because those are your only two options.

Recommended voltage ranges by oil type

Oil Type Suggested Range Notes
Rosin 2.0V – 2.7V 2.4-2.5V is a good starting point for most rosin
Live resin 2.4V – 3.0V Varies by brand and terpene content
Distillate 2.8V – 3.6V Thicker cuts may need more voltage

These are starting points, not rules. A thicker live resin may want more voltage. A cleaner distillate may not need as much. The point is that with 0.1V increments, you can find your specific sweet spot instead of settling for the closest preset.

Lower voltage means smaller clouds with more flavor. Higher voltage means bigger clouds but you start trading off some of that flavor. Finding the balance is the whole game, and that’s exactly what the variable voltage range is built for.

Powerwave Technology: What It Actually Does

Powerwave is Rokin’s built-in coil protection system. It’s included on the Thunder XL.

Here’s what happens without it: when you take a long draw, the coil gets hotter and hotter throughout the hit. There’s a point where it’s producing vapor efficiently, and then there’s a point past that where it’s just burning. Once the coil burns, that taste stays. It doesn’t recover.

Powerwave addresses this by adjusting how power is delivered during the hit. The battery starts at your selected voltage, dips in the middle of the draw, then comes back up near the end. The coil gets enough power to produce vapor without continuously building heat past the point of diminishing returns.

The practical result: fewer burnt cartridges, better tasting hits, and longer life out of each cart.

This matters most on longer draws. Short hits don’t give the coil enough time to overheat. But most people who vape take real hits, not half-second taps. Powerwave is built for how people actually use their batteries.

Preheat Mode

The Thunder XL has a preheat mode with a 15-second digital countdown on the display.

Preheat is useful when oil is thick or when a cart has been sitting cold. It warms the oil before you draw, so your first hit is as good as your third. Without preheat, thick oils can produce a weak or harsh first pull while the oil catches up to temperature.

The countdown timer tells you exactly when it’s ready. No guessing, no wasted countdown that you lose track of.

Build and Specs

  • 14mm width accommodates wider cartridges
  • 650 mAh rechargeable lithium ion battery
  • USB-C charging with cable included
  • Auto-draw and push-button activation
  • Variable voltage: 2.0V – 4.0V in 0.1V increments
  • Powerwave technology
  • Preheat mode with 15-second digital countdown
  • Digital display: voltage, battery life, draw counter
  • 510 thread connection
  • Compatible with Rokin Ceramic Cartridge and Easy Fill cartridge
  • Available in 5 colors
  • 1-year battery warranty
  • Certified to FCC, CE, and RoHS standards

The 14mm width is worth calling out specifically. Standard stick batteries are built around the most common cartridge diameter. Wider carts exist, and on a narrow battery they look awkward and can have contact issues. The Thunder XL’s wider body handles them cleanly.

Who This Battery Is For

The Thunder XL fits you if:

  • You use oil cartridges regularly and want a reliable everyday battery
  • You’ve had carts taste burnt before and want to prevent it
  • You want more than three voltage options
  • You use fatter cartridges that don’t sit well on a standard stick battery
  • You want to see your voltage and battery level without guessing

It’s not the right fit if you want a box mod style battery, if you prefer manual temperature setting by feel rather than display, or if you specifically want a buttonless auto-draw only device.

Price and Value

The Thunder XL is $19.95. You can break that into four payments of $4.99 through Sezzle.

That price point matters in context. A quality live resin cartridge often runs $40-$50 or more. If your battery is burning the coil or not dialing in the voltage correctly, you’re wasting what you paid for the oil. The battery is the last thing you want cutting corners on when the cart costs twice as much.

A 1-year warranty is included.

Frequently Asked Questions

What voltage should I use for a rosin cartridge on the Thunder XL? Start between 2.0V and 2.7V. Most people find 2.4V to 2.5V gives a good balance of flavor and vapor production with rosin. Rosin is sensitive to heat, so starting lower and going up from there is the right approach.

What voltage works best for distillate carts? Distillate generally runs well between 2.8V and 3.6V. The right setting depends on how thick the oil is and how clean the cut is. Thicker distillate usually needs more voltage. Start around 2.8V and adjust up until you hit the cloud production you want without a harsh or burnt taste.

How does Powerwave prevent a burnt cartridge? Powerwave adjusts the power delivery during your draw. Instead of holding steady at your selected voltage the entire hit, it dips in the middle and comes back up near the end. This keeps the coil from building up too much heat on a long draw, which is when most burning happens.

Can I use the Thunder XL with any 510 thread cartridge? Yes. The Thunder XL uses a standard 510 thread connection and works with any compatible 510 thread oil cartridge. It’s also specifically compatible with Rokin’s Ceramic Cartridge and Easy Fill cartridge.

What is auto-draw activation vs. push-button? Auto-draw means the battery fires automatically when you inhale. Push-button means you hold a button while drawing. The Thunder XL has both. Auto-draw is more convenient for casual use. Push-button gives you more control over exactly when the battery fires.

Does the voltage setting affect how fast my cartridge runs out? Higher voltage produces bigger draws, which means you’re moving more oil per hit. Running your cart at 3.6V will go through it faster than running it at 2.4V. If you want your cart to last longer, lower voltage is one way to stretch it.

What does the draw counter actually tell me? It tracks the number of draws you’ve taken since the counter was last reset. It’s useful for tracking how far into a cartridge you are or how your battery is performing over time. Most batteries give you no visibility into this.

How long does the 650 mAh battery last? Battery life varies based on voltage setting and draw length. Higher voltage draws and longer hits use more power. The digital battery indicator on the display tells you your current charge level so you’re not caught off guard.

What does the preheat mode do and when should I use it? Preheat warms the oil for 15 seconds before you draw. It’s most useful when the cartridge is cold, when the oil is thick, or when you’re taking a first hit and want it to perform like a mid-session hit. The digital display counts down from 15 so you know exactly when it’s ready.

Is the Thunder XL wider than a standard stick battery? Yes. The Thunder XL is 14mm wide, which is wider than most standard stick batteries. This makes it a better fit for fatter cartridges that don’t sit correctly on a narrower battery body.

What to do next

  • Start at a lower voltage than you think you need and work up
  • Use preheat on cold or thick carts before your first draw
  • Let the draw counter help you track your oil usage over time
  • If you get a harsh hit, drop the voltage 0.1V at a time until it smooths out
  • The battery is under warranty for a full year. Keep your order confirmation
