How to Use a Vape Cart: Step-by-Step Guide for Newbies

Vape cartridges and 510-thread batteries are probably the greatest things that have ever happened in the world of herbal vaping. With any type of vape gear, you normally have to make a choice between convenience and the quality of your experience. In other words, a vaping setup that’s easier to use generally won’t be as good. That, however, isn’t the case with vape carts at all. Vape carts are filled with herbal concentrates, which are drastically more potent than the original dry herbs used to make those concentrates. Vaping a concentrate also tastes much better than smoking, since you’re tasting the true essence of your favorite herb without any harsh smoke getting in the way.

On top of those benefits, vape carts are also extremely easy to use. You may find that there’s a bit of a learning curve if you’re new to vaping, though, and this article is going to help you through that initial stage. Whether you’re using a pre-filled vape cart or filling your own empty cartridge, we’ll walk you through the process while also explaining a few additional things that you need to know in order to have the best possible experience.

How to Fill a Vape Cart

If you’re using a pre-filled vape cartridge, you can skip this section. If you’re using an empty cartridge, though, you’ll need to fill it with your preferred extract before you can begin vaping. If you’re new to using vape carts, we recommend trying our Easy-Fill cartridge. Compared to other vape cartridges, it has a larger opening at the top and is much easier to fill without making a mess.

You’ll find it much easier to fill a vape cartridge if you have a blunt-tip syringes. Some bulk herbal extracts actually ship in syringes to make the process as convenient as possible. Check the capacity of your cartridge and draw that amount of oil into your syringe. Most vape cartridges hold 0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 ml of oil.

Some cartridges are refillable, and others are intended to be thrown away when they’re empty. If you’re using a refillable cartridge, you can unscrew the mouthpiece to open the cart.

Dispense the oil into the cartridge. If you’re using our Easy-Fill Cartridge, you can put the oil straight into the bottom half of the cartridge. If you’re using another type of cartridge, you’ll find a small filling port that’s slightly offset from the cartridge’s center chimney. Don’t put oil in the chimney, or the cartridge will clog or leak.

If you’re using a refillable cartridge, you can close it by twisting the mouthpiece back on. With a single-use cartridge, you’ll place the mouthpiece over the top of the cartridge and push it down to snap it into place.

After filling a new vape cart, you should always wait a half hour before vaping. An oil-based concentrate is very thick, and it’ll take a while to absorb into the cartridge’s ceramic wick.

How to Get the Right Battery for Your Cartridge

Before you get started with any vape cart, you need to be certain that your vape battery and cartridge will be compatible with one another. If a cartridge has airflow holes in its base like our Titan 2 cartridge, it’ll work with both button-activated and puff-activated batteries. If it has airflow holes at the top like our Easy-Fill cartridge, it requires a button-activated battery. Here’s a compatibility overview for our products. If you’re still unsure, read our overview of the best 510-thread batteries on the market today.

Note that all of our devices will also work with most third-party vape cartridges.

How to Use a Vape Cart

Once you have your vape battery and your filled cartridge ready, it’s time to sit down and enjoy your vaping session. Here’s what you need to do.

  • Charge the battery. Connect one end of the charging cable to your device and connect the other end to your computer’s USB port. Watch your battery’s indicator light to see when it’s done charging.
  • Connect the cartridge. Screw it into the threading at the top of the battery until it’s just tight. Be careful not to over-tighten the cartridge.
  • Turn the device on. If you have a vape battery with a fire button, you can usually turn it on and off by pressing the fire button five times. If your device doesn’t have a fire button, it turns on when a cartridge is connected.
  • Vape. If you have a draw-activated vape battery, it generates vapor automatically when you inhale through the cartridge. If the battery is button activated, hold the button while inhaling through the cartridge.
  • Adjust the power if necessary. If your device has adjustable power, you may want to lower the power slightly if the cartridge tastes burnt. If the cartridge doesn’t produce as much vapor as you’d like, try increasing the power.

To ensure that you’ll always have a good experience when you use vape cartridges, always remember these two important tips.

  • Puff very gently when using a vape cartridge. If you use too much air pressure, you’ll force oil into the cartridge’s coil assembly, and the cartridge will clog or leak.
  • Start slowly if you’ve never vaped a concentrate before. Concentrates are much more potent than dry herbs, so you should puff a few times and wait a while to gauge how you feel before vaping again.

Can You Refill an Empty Vape Cart?

If you’re using a vape cart designed for refilling such as our Easy-Fill cartridge, you can refill the cartridge by twisting it open and adding oil. You can do this as many times as you like until you’re no longer happy with the cartridge’s flavor quality. At that point, you’ll discard the cartridge.

Single-use vape cartridges such as the Titan 2 cartridge are not designed for refilling, but it is possible in some cases to open a single-use cartridge by grasping the mouthpiece and lifting it firmly while wiggling it side to side. Once you’ve opened the cartridge, you can add more oil and replace the mouthpiece. Be very careful when removing the mouthpiece from a single-use cartridge, though, because the cartridge’s outer wall may crack. Learn more about how to refill a vape cart.
